How the water damage cost calculator works
The calculator builds a range from six inputs. It starts with a per square foot rate for extraction, drying and cleanup based on the water category, adds flooring and drywall costs, then adjusts for delay and mold. The result is a mitigation plus repair range, not a single number, because real jobs vary.
| Input | What the calculator assumes |
|---|---|
| Water category | Category 1 (clean): $3.75 to $7 per sq ft. Category 2 (gray): $4.50 to $8.50. Category 3 (black): $7 to $13, which includes sanitizing. |
| Flooring | Adds per sq ft: carpet and pad $0.50 to $1.50, tile, LVP or laminate $1 to $2.50, hardwood $2 to $4.50. |
| Wet drywall height | Treats the area as a square room, estimates the wall length, and prices removal and replacement at $1.80 to $3.50 per sq ft of wall for 2, 4 or 8 feet of height. |
| Time since water started | Multiplies the total by 1.15 at 24 to 48 hours and 1.35 after 48 hours, since materials that stay wet longer usually cannot be saved. |
| Visible mold | Adds $500 to $1,500 for a small area under 10 sq ft, or $1,800 to $6,000 for larger growth, for containment and HEPA cleanup. |
| Minimum | No estimate goes below $450 on the low end or $1,200 on the high end, which reflects the basic cost of a service visit with equipment. |
Two worked examples
A 300 sq ft room with a clean water supply line leak, carpet, and drywall wet up to 2 feet, caught within 24 hours, comes out to about $1,524 to $3,035. The same room with Category 3 water that sat more than 48 hours comes out to about $3,374 to $6,527. The size of the area did not change. The water type and the delay roughly doubled the estimate.
What drives real water damage costs in Denton County
A calculator cannot see your house. These are the factors that move a real estimate up or down:
- Where the water traveled. Water runs under flooring, into the next room and down inside walls. Moisture mapping often finds more wet area than you can see.
- Ceilings and attics. A leak from an attic water heater or AC unit wets insulation and ceiling drywall, which adds removal and replacement.
- Flooring type. Hardwood can often be dried in place if work starts fast. Laminate and some LVP trap water underneath and usually come up.
- Slab versus pier-and-beam. Many older Denton homes near downtown sit on pier-and-beam foundations, which adds crawlspace drying.
- Contents. Moving, protecting or packing out furniture and belongings adds labor.
- Rebuild scope. Paint matching, cabinets, trim and flooring transitions are where repair costs grow.

When to call instead of calculating
Skip the math and call if water is still running, if it came from sewage or outside floodwater, if a ceiling is sagging, or if water is near outlets or the breaker panel. Those situations need someone on site now. The water mitigation steps done in the first 24 hours have the biggest effect on the final cost.

FAQ
Water damage cost calculator questions
How accurate is this water damage cost calculator?
It gives a reasonable range for planning, not a quote. Hidden moisture, ceilings, contents and rebuild choices can move the real cost outside the range. An on-site inspection with moisture meters is the only way to get a firm number.
Does the estimate include repairs or just drying?
Both. It combines mitigation (extraction, drying, cleanup) with typical flooring and drywall replacement. It does not include cabinets, paint matching across whole rooms, or contents replacement.
Why does Category 3 water cost so much more?
Sewage and floodwater require protective gear, removal of porous materials the water touched, antimicrobial treatment and extra cleaning. That adds labor and materials compared to clean water.
Will insurance pay the amount the calculator shows?
If the cause is covered, your insurer usually pays the approved repair cost minus your deductible. Coverage depends on your policy and the cause of the water.
Why does waiting make the estimate higher?
Materials that stay wet longer swell, delaminate and can grow mold, so more has to be removed instead of dried. The calculator adds 15 percent at 24 to 48 hours and 35 percent after 48 hours.
